The Travellers Journey

Reasons for travelling the world. Some great opinions on why we travel, very thought provoking! http://www.thetravellersjourney.com/2009/06/12/travel-blog/why-travel/this-will-be-gone-tomorrow-another-reason/

I HAve just started to but together a travel journal web iste, i hope that it does not make this one obsolete. i am sure i will still have some things to say about SEO here but most of my writing is going to be about traveling so you will probably find more there. Have a look at my new Travel Bolg.

What better why to truly start a blog than to document some of my initial thoughts about the process of blogging. Unlike my first post this is not going to be a collection of thoughts scribbled down on a piece of paper/post. This entry requires thought, draft and re-draft. This I think is something that the majority of posts, which, if  you want to make any sense. . .  should include.

I once read a article about starting a blog and perhaps more importantly how to keep it going. Unfortunately I can no longer find this, i think it was by Seth Gooding but not sure, (if anyone remembers please let me know where to find)  instead i have using trusty google i have found 10 tips for starting a blog. This gives you a great ideas on structuring your blog, but does not talk about how difficult it can be to start a blog.

What i would like to do here is give you an idea of some of the problems you might in counter in your first weeks of writing a blog and possible ways that you can overcome them. Please remember, I am by no means a professional blogger, i would not say i am a particularly good writer, in fact i used to hate anything that involved writing. What i am though, is a people person. . . so just maybe my blog will work?

Some points to conside : –

  • Finding your Blog – I have so much to say, so much i want to talk about. Where do you start, Does it matter where you start? Finding your topic, your area and your style… For me this is not important, for me its about having some where to talk about anything. The things you enjoy, the bad things that happen, whatever. I in visage over time my blog turning into something which has more structure and a theme to it, in fact i already have thoughts i would like to continue throughout my blog. If you are not quite sure what to write about, write about anything . . see where it takes you. If you cant think about anything do what I’m doing, write about it.  ‘Thinking about Nothing’?

  • Staying on Topic – Its hard, for me anyway to stay writing about the same thing for any length of time. I am always wanting to move to the next thing, the result from a writing point of view is a complete mess. Its almost worth me just having a twitter account and loosing the blog altogether. For example I now want to go off on a little rant about twitter etc. Enough said! I should imagine that this is not the same for all. I should think that there are those reading this who feel that hey drag on when writing. I do not necessarily think that this is a bad thing either way, what is important is to be aware of it. I am not talking about querying everything you write, i think that almost makes blog worthless and boring if I’m honest. Maybe go back and re-read once before you publish, after that go back later at any point and read some old posts from a month back, six months back. What do you think about them, what would you change if you did it again. Don’t, whatever you do destroy the sole of our blog.

  • Record your idea’s – Kinda related to the above, remember all those times that a good idea for a piece of writing pops into your head and its gone the next minute. Write it down, make a list on another page. That list will be great for the days you don’t feel like writing or cant think of anything to think about.

  • Set your self a target post rate – This helps you and your readers. If you post regularly, people are far more likely to read often. I feel that it also stops your blog from going stale. If its only 2 posts a month, its better than one month there being 4 and then another 4 posts 3 months later.

  • The Readers – Something i have noticed is that they me and go, i hope that over time them will become more loyal or my blog will be found more easily through search. I think for those of us who have limited readers, its important to remember that its not all about who’s reading what you write. Its also about what you get out of it. . .

I think on that rather profound not i will leave this post, have a think, if there are any other problems which you think i may have missed please comment or get some posts up on your blog. I hope to follow this post and my previous one with some more information on how to use search in the best possible way to get readers to your blog. Stick around you may find it helpfull . . .

A very recent post i have read about Word Press search update is very interesting. It boasts that it is going to be easier to find blogs and most recent posts. Fantastic.

I  find it really quite difficult to find what i am looking for when searching for blogs. Its not like the Internet and google, people are just writing away, there is little or no thought into what the search engines are looking at in a blog. As a result i have but together a few basic pointers, these are very basic and if you really want alot more people to find you i would recommend doing some research.

  • Title – Make the title as relevant as you possibly can to what your taking about, For example, Find my blog. It does not always have to be a good title but one that is going to get searched for.
  • Repeat – The words in the title which you think people will search for. Examples for this one would be Help find my blog.
  • Link – Link to other relevant blogs or web pages. I know that what i am writing here is basis Search Engine optimisation so i might put a link into SEO Book which is where the real SEO begins. This is a scary and complex world, very interesting though. Eventually other people will begin to link into your posts, when this starts to happen you will be found alot more easily, this takes time though.
  • Use Excerpt & Tags – Always remember that the search engines whether it be google or wordpress are looking for as much information as possible. By labeling your post with the relevant tags, categories and Excerpt you are helping the search engines find you.
  • Content – Make it good, get more traffic. Content is key. 5 tips on writing blog posts.

Remember, your blog, whatever the subject is, is your blog. These guidelines/idea’s do not have to be followed religiously but they will help bring more people to your site.

This post is a continuation of one of my first posts, we are all on a journey, I only posted it yeasterday afternoon. The comments that where left about my original question have opened new doors and more than that a certain hunger within. To understand, to understand what a traveller wants, needs and searches for.

Is this understanding what a traveller looks for? is this the hunger?

What is clear is that there are some huge differences between travel and a journey whih i did not coment on. A journey can be from A to B, it can also be a life time or throught a bottle of wine. A traveller is on a journey, and the meaning/purpose of this journey is different for everyone. What people gain from there experiences when they travel is different for everyone. Thus, everyone Journey/travel is different.

What is most interesting for me is that i have friends who have travelled for relatively short periods of time, 1 year or so. I have to ask the question to myself, did they really travel, where they a traveller. What did they get out of their journey? Some came back with stories of drinking in bars, women and good times. Others had adrenalin filled experiences which they will never forget. None have spoken to me about cultures and the people they have met. Did they travel, or simply go on a long holiday! Did they think about culture, people and their spiritual development (I understand that their are many more which could be added here) while they where travelling. Did they think about it when they got back?

What is a ‘traveler’, what is ‘travel’? To me, or you it could be something completely different to the next person reading this post! A journey is just as ambiguous?

Like everything in life their are extremes, maybe when you become an ‘Extreme Traveler’ (Have no idea what an extreme traveler is but it kinda fits) these lines and ambiguities become less complicate, or do they?

I came across an interesting post today in a blog i follow, Can you travel for 2 long is a interesting post for me becuase all i want to do is travel. I will travel, in fact i almost have a date.

What interests me currently, while in my fairly structured, career driven life is how anyone would want to settle for something like this on a full time basis. I can understand those who want to build families follow a hobbies that they enjoy. But we are all travelling somewhere, arnt we?

It lead me to think about what exactly travel is. Is it the constant moving from place to place, meeting new people. If so if i change jobs every 2-3 years and move to a different part of the country/world, am i not a traveller?

Life is Travel, Travel is Life . . .

10, even 5 years ago the world of wine was an out of reach place. A stereotypical and distant land where you either had to have money or be able to use big unheard of words. This is changing, boy is this changing. . .

I would say i know little about wine, not because i don’t know what i like or what most Merlot or sancerre’s taste like but because i know how huge and complex the world of wine is. As you learn more, the more you realise there is to learn. You start off simple, grape varieties in the new world, you learn quickly because its easy to pick our wines you like and the flavours are big and bold. Then you move back into the old world, the complexity is huge, different regions, different grapes, different wine makers. This can be over whelming but the approach to wine is changing . . .

Wine is no longer stuffy and anal, anyone who enjoys wine can get stuck in. Share a bottle, safe in the knowledge that they can talk about the wine and what it means to them. How it tastes to them.  I recently herd the descriptive term ‘Saddle Wax’ to describe the nose of a rather yummy Burgundy from a small unknown wine maker who is doing amazing things in France. Saddle Wax, does anyone out there know what saddle wax smells like? Its not that it smells like saddle wax, its that it gives you that feeling of when you walk into a stable, the mix of smells. OK, so you are still picking out something quite specific but, its specific to you and how you enjoy the wine. When i came to taste the wine could I smell, ‘saddle wax’? Of course i could! Would i have identified it as saddle wax in the first place, NO WAY!

Forget the explosion of new world wine’s, forget the changing production techniques in Bordeaux. What i see is that people’s perception of wine, people’s  love of wine and the way we talk about wine is changing, you no longer have to be a snob or wealthy to enjoy and learn about wine.

The Change is for the better, Cheers all.
